LGBTQIA+ Dating Apps: Which One is Right For Me?

GRINDR

Grindr is a fast-paced dating app, which utilizes a feed where users can interact with any profile at any time. Unlike other dating apps where users can “match” with one another based on interest, Grindr allows its users to reach out to anyone at any time. In addition, grindr users are permitted to send photos to one another, which can result in the unsolicited sending and requesting of nude photos. Grindr users can see the exact distance in feet that they are from other users.

To protect your privacy, users can block other users if they are engaging in harassing behaviors. However, with Grindr’s lack of censorship and photo-enabled chat function, any user can send you any kind of message or photo, oftentimes without serious repercussions. With Grindr’s location accessibility, use of photos, and direct messaging features, the culture of Grindr is fast-paced and hook-up oriented.

TINDER

Tinder is a dating app that facilitates romantic or sexual connections, although users can also use it to find friends or expand their social networks. The app allows users to create their own profile, and then indicate their interest in other profiles, one-at-a-time, by swiping left or right. Tinder uses location-based technology to match users with potential partners who are nearby.

While both Grindr and Tinder are popular dating apps among queer young adults, Tinder only allows users to message one another if they have both indicated a mutual interest in connecting. In addition, Tinder does not allow users to directly send photos to each other, eliminating the possibility of unsolicited nude photos or the repercussions of sharing nude photos of oneself with others online.
